The Dark Side of Fad Diets

Sunday, November 29th, 2009 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

Fad diets are diets that involve rapid weight loss, but are only to be followed for a short period of time.  The term has also come to mean any diet that explodes into national or international fame, only to plummet into obscurity. Some of these fad diets include the cabbage soup diet, the Atkins diet, and the cookie diet. Check out the Every Other Day Diet review and Cheat Your Way Thin review. They have been proven to work quite effectively for fat loss and they both talk about lifestyle diet rather than simple fad. Are they telling the truth or are they FAD as well?

Fad diets are sometimes known as food fad-ism. Any time one particular food suddenly becomes a superstar, that’s a food fad. These all have two things in common:

-    Some elements of the food are said to have miraculous properties.
-    Other foods are removed from the diet because they have negative properties that should be avoided.

The Atkins diet displays the characteristics of one of these fad diets. Carbohydrates are avoided like the plague, because a carbohydrate low diet can do amazing things for your body. Low carbohydrates are extremely desirous in Atkins, because then the body enters a super fat burning condition.  Although it is a long-term diet, it did have short phases during which carbohydrate cutting was taken to the extreme. Unlike many fad diets the Atkins diet was designed to be something a person could stick to for a long period of time.

As with many fad diets Atkins rose quickly and fell just as quickly. For a number of years the Atkins diet was everywhere, and everyone seemed to be following it .  Every movie star, singer, and sports figure claimed to use the Atkins diet when they needed to lose weight. But after the death of Dr. Atkins, the diet became much less of a household word.

Many fad diets can be quite dangerous.  Even a diet like the Subway diet, as first presented in the commercials, could have problems. It was based on the legend of Jared, a young man who’d lost nearly 250 pounds in only a year by eating Subway sandwiches, baked chips, and diet soda. But Jared had made a radical shift in his caloric habits.  That could have killed him. The diet did include many positive aspects such as exercise, like walking. Let’s talk about workouts. The newly released Warp Speed Fat Loss program claims to melt MORE than 2lbs of fat per week. Would one call it a Fad WORKOUT?

Approach fad diets with caution. A long-term eating strategy combined with moderate exercise is usually the better bet.

Watches, Your Kids and You

Are you searching for a fun gift for your niece or nephew? Think about giving a watch. Wrist watches are a perfect gift idea due to the fact that they can be a teaching tool and a lot of enjoyment for the one getting it.

Often people recall the watches they used as kids, especially their very first watch. It is a item that feels a little grown up, but it is styled in such a way that will definitely appeal to kids interests and tastes.

For the younger children wrist watches provide a fun and direct opening for them to learn how to tell time. Many are specially designed to help make learning less complicated with specifics like labeling on the hour and minute hands or dividing the watch into sections. Plus they come in so many creative colors and designs it’s no problem finding one that matches each child’s personality. If the gift is for a young child you may consider looking at Timex childrens watches.

As kids get older they will likely start to prefer a watch that feels a bit more grown up and potentially one that has extra functions. Some will still prefer the character-based watches, but some will start to find greater interest in the sports or adult looking watches. That will largely depend on the child’s personality. Before you start shopping for kids watches you’ll definitely need to be ready and know a little about the child receiving it.

If you make the effort to get a watch that fits the child’s individuality it can be a huge hit, maybe even the favorite gift that they can’t wait to show off to their classmates and friends. You will know you’ve bought a good one when you see the large grin on their happy face.
